Can a player be Traded after the retention deadline? Here’s what you need to know

The IPL season is just around the corner, and the excitement is at its peak. The franchises revealed their retention lists on November 15, and now the battle for the auction has started. The IPL 2026 auction is going to take place on December 16, with the franchises willing to spend their entire budget on the players they want to get.

The two franchises, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR), have made the first big move of the season by doing a trade of two star players. Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran will be wearing the pink jersey for IPL 2026, while Sanju Samson will be the one in the yellow.

At the auction, KKR (Kolkata Knight Riders) and CSK (Chennai Super Kings) will have the largest budgets among all the franchises to fill the gaps in their squads with new players.

Every team will try their best to improve the chances of having a shot at the trophy. The team’s needs are likely to evolve, and thus a key question might arise. Are teams allowed to still trade the players they retained between the time the retention deadline is over and the IPL 2026 auction?

Here is all that we need to learn about it.

IPL 2026 Auction Post Deadline Rules

The organizers of each IPL season give a specific time frame, called the trading window, during which players can be traded. This trading window is divided into two sections—pre and post-auction.

Pre-auction window: This window opens a month after the end of every IPL season and closes a week prior to the auction.

Post-auction window: This window opens every year after the auction (December 2025 in this case) and closes one month before the next IPL season (2026 in this case) starts.

Now the important point has come! The post-deadline rules state that only the players who were retained can be traded after the deadline till the auction. For instance, a player who is retained by his franchise for IPL 2026 can be traded after November 15 for a player who is retained by another franchise

Nonetheless, after the IPL 2026 auction, this rule will change slightly, which is a must to know for everyone who franchises and stakeholders are involved in the tournament. Players purchased during the IPL 2026 auction cannot be traded in the same season.

In addition, the trade has to be agreed upon by both the franchise and the player. If one side does not agree to the terms, then the trade cannot occur as per the regulations that are legally binding on both sides.

Moreover, in the case of two players with unequal salary structures being swapped/traded, the franchise that gets the high-paid resource will have to pay the difference.
