IPL 2024: Rohit Sharma Was Informed During The ODI World Cup, Hardik Joined MI At The Promise Of Being Captain: Reports

Haridk Pandya is all set to attain the role of captain for the Mumbai Indians in the forthcoming IPL 2024 season. This announcement has generated a major excitement in the cricket community, contributing to the ever-evolving narrative of leadership within the Mumbai Indians franchise.

Mumbai Indians management has picked Hardik Pandya as their next captain for the franchise, meaning the star Indian opener Rohit Sharma will no longer be serving as the captain of the side.

Hardik Pandya was traded back to Mumbai Indians two weeks ago during the player’s retention period. Earlier he served as the captain of the Gujarat Titans in the 2022 and 2023 editions. In 2022, Gujarat Titans lifted the trophy in the captaincy of Pandya while reaching the finals this year.

According to some reliable sources, Rohit Sharma was informed about this transition during the 2023 ODI World Cup. The sources also claimed that Hardik Pandya joined the Mumbai franchise on the promise of being the captain of the side. Sharma endorsed the proposal, engaging in multiple discussions with the franchise during the World Cup where they talked about their longer vision for the team.

The Global head of performance for Mumbai Indians said,”It is part of legacy building and staying true to the MI philosophy of being future-ready. Mumbai Indians have always been blessed with exceptional leadership right from Sachin to Harbhajan and Ricky to Rohit, who while contributing to the immediate success have always had an eye on strengthening the team for the future. It is in keeping with this philosophy that Hardik Pandya will assume captaincy of Mumbai Indians for the IPL 2024 season.”

“We express our gratitude to Rohit Sharma for his exceptional leadership; his tenure as the captain of the Mumbai Indians since 2013 has been nothing short of extraordinary. His leadership has not only brought unparalleled success to the team but has also solidified his place as one of the finest captains in the history of the IPL,” Mahela said.

Not to forget, Rohit Sharma is the most successful captain in the history of Indian Premier League, and under his captaincy Mumbai has lifted the title for the five times, particularly in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020.

Rohit Sharma has captained Mumbai Indians in 158 matches and won 87 of them. He lost 67 matches and has a win percentage of 55.06.
