MS Dhoni’s retirement from Chennai Super Kings (CSK) is a topic of much speculation among cricket fans and pundits alike. Dhoni, the captain of CSK since the inception of IPL. And has played a major role in their success over the years.
There have been rumors circulating that Dhoni may retire from CSK after IPL 2023, which has led to much discussion about who might replace him as captain.
Former Pakistani cricketer and commentator Wasim Akram has suggested that local players like Ajinkya Rahane are better options for IPL captaincy than foreign players. Akram believes that foreign players may need to remember their teammates’ names, making it difficult for them to lead a team effectively.
Talking to a media house Wasim Akram said, “I think CSK haven’t a better option than Rahane. He has the ability to perform consistently and is one of the best local players. We have seen that local players are more successful in franchise cricket.”
“As for foreign players, they don’t even remember players’ names, so how can they lead? So, I think Rahane is an excellent choice to lead Chennai if Dhoni says he’s had enough. CSK might have their plans, but they are a franchise that plans by putting a lot of thought, epitomized by Stephen Fleming, who knows the team culture inside and out, and the players also trust him fully,” Akram further added.
Ravindra Jadeja, one of the key players for CSK over the years, was appointed as the captain for the first time in IPL 2022 after regular skipper MS Dhoni decided to step down from the role. However, the move yielded a different result than the desired results, as CSK struggled to find consistency under Jadeja’s captaincy.
“CSK had tried Ravindra Jadeja as captain in IPL 2022 and saw that his performances were getting affected. They had to change the captain.”
In 7 matches that Jadeja led CSK in IPL 2022, he managed to win only 2 matches, with the team losing 5 games. Moreover, his performances with the bat and ball also differed from his usual standards during this period.
