IPL 2023: ‘We Have Asked Batters To Play More Aggressively’, Stephen Fleming On MS Dhoni’s Powerful Cameo

In the 54th match of Indian Premier League 2023, MS Dhoni-led side Chennai Super Kings beat Delhi Capitals by 27 runs at MA Chidambaram stadium. With this win, CSK has now accumulated 15 points and they have sealed the second spot in the points table as of now.

The pitch of Chepauk was not favorable for batters but Shivam Dube and MS Dhoni managed to maintain a strike rate of over 200 and hit brilliantly against the DC bowlers. With their powerful batting, CSK reached a total of 167/8. The most important part is both Shivam Dube and Mahendra Singh Dhoni are suffering from their respective injuries.

Dhoni had been struggling with a knee problem since the start of the season, and Dube is still recovering from a finger injury he sustained during the match against the Mumbai Indians on Saturday. However, they managed to produce impressive and powerful hits and took the team to a respectable total.

MS Dhoni has been in magnificent form and the coach of CSK, Stephen Fleming said that he has been training specifically to handle such challenging situations.

He’s just training a certain way. He knows he’s not going to bat for a long time, and we had a lot of batting ahead. So he has really concentrated on the last three overs. He wasn’t as mobile between the wickets today, but he pushed pretty hard. So he has concentrated on pretty strong hitting practice, and you can see the benefits of that. He is just comfortable being able to play around the ground. We know how good a hitter of the ball he is, and his access in certain areas is still very strong. So that cameo again at the end was valuable in a hard-fought 20 overs,” Fleming said at the post-match press conference.

Fleming said that Dube is so important for the middle order while Dhoni has been instrumental in the death overs. The former Kiwi captain said that he has asked the batters to play more risk shots and aggressively.

“I think it’s a reflection of how the game is being played. We’ve asked players to play more high-risk (shots), and the way you compose an inning is a little bit different. So I’m happy with the cameos,” Fleming stated.
