Punjab Kings defeated Chennai Super Kings by four wickets in a close encounter on Sunday in Indian Premier League 2023. After the match, skipper Dhoni seemed a little off from their bowlers’ performance; on the other hand, he praised Maheesh Pathirana.
Chennai Super Kings captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni told the IPL broadcasters after the match, “We bowled two bad overs in the middle overs. Bowlers should know where to bowl. It was clear that now the batters would try to hit big shots. Dhoni said his bowlers have less experience, and the batters must compensate for it.”
He further stated, “We could have scored 10-15 more runs during our batting. Our bowlers are still young. He just needs a little more experience.”
Praising Maheesh Pathirana for bowling brilliantly under pressure, he said, “He bowled well, but other than that, we need to see whether our planning was wrong or its execution was poor.”
Chennai captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the toss in this match and decided to bat first. Chennai batters, led by Devon Conway, proved their captain’s decision right, and the team scored 200 runs for four wickets. Devon Conway scored the most unbeaten 92 runs for Chennai. Apart from him, Rituraj Gaikwad scored 37 runs, and Shivam Dubey scored 28 runs. Arshdeep Singh, Sam Karan, Rahul Chahar, and Sikandar Raza took one wicket each for Punjab.
Chasing a target of 201 runs for the win, the Punjab team struggled at 129 for three after the 15th match, but the Chennai bowlers gave away 24 runs in the 16th over and 17 runs in the 17th over, which turned the match around.
