As per the latest development of a report, the Punjab Kings franchise is in a revamp mood, and after parting away with Anil Kumble from the head coach duties, now the owners are looking for a new captain. It means Mayank Agarwal will no longer be the skipper of Punjab in the next session of IPL 2023.
The reports claim that the franchise wants Mayank Agarwal to focus on his batting and for the same reason they have replaced him from the captaincy role.
The interesting part is that Punjab Kings have already decided whom they are going with as the next captain. If sources are to be believed, England’s destructive opener Jonny Bairstow is all set to take up the new responsibility for Punjab’s team. However, nothing is officially confirmed as of now. Reports also suggest that England’s former Skipper Eoin Morgan is ready to take the role of the head coach for the franchise along with Trevor Bayliss. The decision came after the consecutive failure of the team under the coaching of Anil Kumble.
A Punjab Kings official has talked to inside sport and said, “No Mayank is not in plans to lead. He will need to focus on batting. He will be a crucial player for us. As for Anil, we are discussing a few options but nothing has materialized yet. We have time left. We will take a call at the right time.”
Punjab Kings had a decent performance last year under the captaincy of Mayank. The team played 14 matches and had a balanced result with 7 wins and 7 defeats. The team finished at the 6th position in the points table under the competition of 10 teams in this cash-rich league.
