On December 23 in Kochi, the IPL player auction for the 2023 season will take place. As opposed to the huge auction that took place before the 2022 edition, where the ten franchises had to almost construct their squads from start, this one will be a little auction.
Each club will have an additional INR 5 crore (about US $607,000) to spend at this auction in addition to the funds left over from their last auction purse plus the worth of the players they release, bringing the total purse to INR 95 crore (around US $11.5 million).
After the last auction, Punjab Kings had the most money remaining with INR 3.45 crore (about US $425,000), while Lucknow Super Giants had used up all of their funds. Royal Challengers Bangalore was next with INR 1.55 crore or about US $188,000, followed by Rajasthan Royals with INR 0.95 crore or roughly US $115,000, and Kolkata Knight Riders with INR 0.45 crore or roughly US $55,000. Chennai Super Kings had INR 2.95 crore (around US $358,000) remaining.
Gujarat Titans, the defending champions, had INR 0.15 crore (about US $18,000) remaining, while Mumbai Indians, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Delhi Capitals each had INR 0.10 crore (around US $12,000).
The mega auction in February took place over two days, while the mini-auction will be completed in only one. The most extravagant purchases, particularly of foreign players, have come through mini auctions in the past.
Allrounders Ben Stokes, Sam Curran, and Cameron Green all caught the eye of teams this year, and they are expected to enter the auction. If they do, there will probably be a big market for them.
Three sides, Punjab, Delhi, and Lucknow, only purchased seven foreign players in the 2022 auction, thus they could be searching for someone to fill the eighth and final position.
