Gary Ballance who has played cricket both for England and Zimbabwe announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on April 19. The left-handed batter made his debut for Zimbabwe after signing a two-year contract with them.
The left-handed cricketer stated that he no longer wishes to continue playing any form of cricket. He represented Zimbabwe in one Test, one T20I, and five ODIs and scored a total of five Test centuries, including a score of 137 runs against the West Indies.
According to a statement by the Professional Cricketers’ Association, Ballance said,”After much thought, I have decided to retire from all forms of professional cricket with immediate effect.”
“I had hoped my move to Zimbabwe would provide me with a new-found happiness for the game and I will always be thankful to Zimbabwe Cricket for providing me with an opportunity to return to international cricket and welcoming me into their team,” he stated.
“However, I have reached the stage where I no longer have the desire to dedicate myself to the rigours of professional sport and it would do Zimbabwe Cricket and the game itself a disservice, should I carry on. I wish them every success going forward,” Ballance added.
In 2014, Ballance made his Test debut for England and appeared in 23 matches for the national team. However, his career took a downturn after 2017. Moreover, he was embroiled in a controversy involving allegations of “racism” in Yorkshire as he was accused of using racist language against his teammate Azeem Rafiq. After this to give a shape to his cricket career Ballance signed a contract with Zimbabwe.
