During the 24th match of IPL 2023, against the Royal Challengers Bangalore MS Dhoni’s performance with the gloves was a bit mixed. In the second over of RCB’s innings, he dropped a catch hit by Faf du Plessis which resulted in the ball going towards the boundary. This mistake proved to be costly for CSK as du Plessis scored a quick 62 off just 33 balls. However, Dhoni made up for his mistake by taking two crucial catches of Glenn Maxwell and du Plessis later in the match which changed the game for CSK.
During the match, when MS Dhoni was catching Glenn Maxwell’s ball, he had to alter the position of his gloves suddenly. Right after completing the catch, the captain of CSK went to the umpire and raised an objection about the placement of the spidercam.
Devon Conway who was named Player of the Match for his outstanding 83 off 45 balls suggested that the spider cam’s presence had caused difficulties for players during CSK’s close eight-run victory. He also expressed that technology should not be allowed to disrupt the game as players find it challenging to perform their action.
Conway said,”It’s nice to have that technology to show different angles of the game but there come a point where (it) can’t get too involved and interfere with the game. MS (Dhoni) was probably trying to speak to the umpires, saying ‘don’t get too close to the action and try to avoid too much (of what’s) going on.”
It (interference) happened a couple of times where the ball had got very close to the spider cam as well as the wires, that can obviously put a fielder off. I think Faf stepped away a couple of times because the shadows of the spidercam were in his way. It’s obviously a little bit testing for guys,” he said.
Conway, Ajinkya Rahane, and Shivam Dube were the batters who helped CSK to reach around 226 runs at the loss of six wickets.
During the press conference after the match, Conway said, “Tonight (Monday) was a really good surface to bat on, so for us to get those big totals it’s about trying to create a strike rate of around 200-plus.”
