Several Indian cricketers including Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma regard MS Dhoni as a mentor and have openly acknowledged their appreciation for the valuable guidance he provided them during the early stages of their careers. Dhoni served as the captain of the Indian cricket team for almost 11 years from 2007 to 2018 and he is also captaining Chennai Super Kings since the inception of IPL in 2008.
Dhoni is known for maintaining a jovial and cheerful environment with his teammates. One of the most highlighted moments was seen during the 2023 IPL season during which Dhoni engaged in several humorous incidents with all-rounder Deepak Chahar. Captain Cool has now openly discussed his bond with Chahar.
Dhoni talked about Deepak Chahar during the trailer launch of ‘Let’s Get Married’ a Tamil Film being produced by MS Dhoni under his production company Dhoni Entertainment.
The former Indian Captain said, “Deepak Chahar is like a drug, if he is not there, you would think, where is he – if he is around, you would think, why he is here – the good part is that he is maturing but he takes time and that is the problem, in my lifetime, I won’t see him matured (smiles).”
Chahar was one of the important bowlers who helped CSK lift the fifth IPL title beating Gujarat Titans by five wickets. In a recent interview on Breakfast With Champions Chahar talked about the freedom given by Dhoni to his bowlers. Chahar said, “I was bowling in the death overs for the very first time. They never made me bowl in the death because it was not needed. There were bowlers like Shardul and Bravo to bowl the death overs. Now Bravo got injured. It was a critical match.”

Chahar said that he bowled two beamers and then Dhoni came and had some words with him. “He (Dhoni came to me and said ‘You act smart as if you know everything. Why are you bowling in this manner?’ I was thinking that my career was over. Then I gave 5 runs off the next 5 balls and after the match he hugged me,” the pacer said.
