The upcoming season of the Indian Premier League will possibly be the last season of their skipper MS Dhoni. And for the next skipper role, CSK has been grooming some cricketers to be their next leader. In this race, England’s skipper Ben Stokes is the top contender, and that’s why CSK picked him for such a mammoth amount of price 16.25 Cr in the IPL 2023 auction.
However, some of the experts also think that Rituraj Gaikwad will be the new skipper of Chennai because he will serve this franchise longer than Ben Stokes. Now it will be interesting to see who will be the next skipper of CSK after Dhoni.
Before going forward, the big news is coming that Ben Stokes will leave the IPL in midway because they have to play a test match against Ireland starting from 1st June. However, after that, they will feature in the Ashes series.
Speaking on this, former Indian cricketer and IPL expert Aakash Chopra stated that if he plans to leave the IPL in mid-season, it will be a major setback for him and the CSK if they are looking for a new skipper in him.
“Some people were saying that the Chennai Super Kings gave so much money to Ben Stokes because they want to groom him for captaincy. If you want to groom him for captaincy and the apparent heir leaves in the last phase, even if Chennai have decided, they will not be able to do the hand-holding.” Said Aakash Chopra.
Further, he added that if MS wants to hand over his role to Stokes, it will happen because Ben may not be available at the end of the tournament.
“As they say, pass on the baton – how will that happen because MS Dhoni will be captaining, and halfway through, if he says that he will give it to Stokes, he will not be available in the end. So that cannot happen.” Chopra further added.
It will be interesting to see who will be the next captain of the CSK. Because handing over the leadership role between the seasons is not a wise call, and no one will do that. So let’s wait and watch Chennai’s plan for whom they selected the new skipper because they have many options inform of Gaikwad, Moeen Ali, Stokes and Sir Jadeja.
