The Pakistan Government’s decision to permit the Men in Green to compete in their 2026 T20 World Cup match against India at R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Sunday protected the International Cricket Council (ICC) from suffering a substantial financial loss.
The PCB conducted secret negotiations with its ICC and Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) counterparts before they revealed their decision to participate in the upcoming match.
How Much Money Did ICC Save?
According to an Indian Express report Pakistan’s choice to participate in the marquee tournament has allowed the ICC to avoid a $174 million loss which converts to Rs. 1560 crores. This total included all expenses related to broadcaster payments gate revenue from ticket sales and sponsorship agreements.
Why Did Pakistan Change Its Decision?
The Bangladesh Cricket Board requested the PCB to proceed with the match because they believed it would benefit international cricket. The ICC announced minutes later that Bangladesh would not face any financial penalties for withdrawing from the tournament while receiving hosting rights to an ICC event scheduled between 2028 and 2031.
The Shehbaz Sharif-led government announced their decision based on the results of discussions between ICC, PCB, and BCB and their alliance partners requests. The organization made the decision because they wanted to maintain the essence of cricket while allowing the sport to continue worldwide in all participating countries.
