‘I try and watch his videos as…’, Jitesh Sharma talks about his inspiration MS Dhoni after getting national call up

Nearly every aspiring wicketkeeper looks up to former India captain MS Dhoni for his incredibly quick and precise glovework, not just the wicket-keepers of the Indian setup, Ishan Kishan and Rishabh Pant. Jitesh Sharma, a wicketkeeper for Vidarbha, has earned a spot in India’s T20I squad as Sanju Samson’s replacement due to injury.

Dhoni continues to be a top player in that area even after retiring from international cricket. He will always rank as one of the best wicketkeeper-batters because of his glovework and concentration when protecting the wickets. Jitesh explained how mentors like AB de Villiers and Rohit Sharma had a significant impact on his growth into a potent batter. But he insisted that the only role model he had for his glovework was Dhoni.

Jitesh told Sports Yaari, “In India, everything starts after MS Dhoni, so there’s no need to even say how inspiring he has been for every cricketer including me. He has always been so incredible with his glovework.”

In addition to being an aggressive batsman for Vidarbha and the Punjab Kings (PBKS) during his first IPL season last year, Jitesh Sharma has shown himself to be a trustworthy finisher. Because Dhoni is still one of the best finishers in game history, Jitesh keeps studying footage of the former Indian captain winning matches to observe how he handles pressure. He added, “In my off-time, I try and watch his videos to understand how he handles pressure, takes the game deep, or targets particular bowlers. By God’s grace if I get a chance to interact with him in person, will try to learn a lot more from him.”

A three-match T20I series between Team India and Sri Lanka is currently underway. A three-match ODI series will follow. Sanju Samson was forced to remain in Mumbai for scans as the squad left for Pune due to an injury he acquired during the first game. He was ultimately declared ineligible to continue in the series, and Jitesh was appointed in his place.
