Star Indian batter Shubman Gill has confessed that he has not done so good in Tests so far against his own expectations. The 24-year-old right-handed batsman, who scored a century in his last Test match for India against England in Dharamsala, said he is looking forward to putting up good performances over the next few months when India will be playing 10 Test matches.
“In Test cricket, my performance has not matched my expectations so far. I am hoping after those 10 Tests I will have lived up to my expectations,” PTI quoted him.
Gill, who will be leading India A against India B in the Duleep Trophy 2024 on September 5 at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, said he is focusing on better defence against spinners to make an impression this upcoming season that begins with two home Tests against Bangladesh later on this month.
Gill stated, “I focused more on my defense specifically against spinners. When playing on such a turning wicket, spinners should find themselves easily beaten by the bat’s defense before scoring shots can come into play.”
“In addition, due to increased T20 matches…though I won’t call it flat pitches but instead good for batting pitches; this has impacted your defensive game,” he spoke out referring to how he approached the England tour which was recently concluded.
The star batsman whose promotion to being India’s vice captain during white-ball tour of Sri Lanka last month came as no surprise also spoke about his matured self growing both as a person and cricketer interconnected with the captaincy roles in India and IPL stint with Gujarat Titans.
No matter whether captain or not every match/tournament you play should lead you towards understanding yourself better,” he said adding that vice versa is true within teammates because being under commander is where you understand others more,” but added Captains must also be connected to their players.”
“You need to know their strong points alongside weak points for me much has changed in me especially when it comes about talking as captain/vice-captain,” he elucidated further.
