Australia’s former team captain Aaron Finch has shared his opinion on the advice of Sunil Gavaskar regarding who should captain the Indian team for the series with Australia. The Border-Gavaskar series is set to commence on the 22nd of November. As per reports, India’s Test captain Rohit Sharma is likely to skip the first match of the five-match test series in Australia, however, for personal reasons. Gavaskar had mentioned that the squad should pick a new skipper for the series if Rohit misses the earlier tests owing to personal reasons. This came after the Indian team endured a 3-0 home series loss against New Zealand, and Gavaskar has recommended that there should be one captain in the team for an entire series.
“There has been information suggesting that Rohit Sharma will not take part in the first Test match, he is likely to miss the second one. In that situation, I say that the Indian selection committee should state right now, Well if you need to take a break them take a break if there are any other personal issues consider them. But if you cannot be present for almost two-thirds of the matches then this tour you should come only as a player. The captain of the tour will be the vice-captain dressed in this position,” Gavaskar had narrated to Sports Tak.
‘‘Indian cricket is the bigger picture’. I’d say that if we had lost this series to New Zealand 3-0 and were in a winning series, captaincy wouldn’t be a question. Then, this loss has raised the need for a captain. The role of a captain is to bring the players together. If there are no primus inter pares from the very beginning it is better to appoint another person as the captain Gavaskar had said in addition.

“I disagree with Sunny on that totally Rohit is the captain of the Indian cricket team. There are times when you have to stay back at home because your wife is having a baby and that is such a wholesome moment, and you stay out as long as you have to for that,” Finch said.
