Aakash Chopra, a former opener, noted that Shreyas Iyer is unlikely to return to the Indian Test side soon. Iyer played his last Test match for India in the home series against England, and he was not included in the squad for the first Test of the upcoming two-match series against Bangladesh.
Additionally, earlier this year, the 29-year-old lost his central contract after allegedly rejecting to play domestic cricket due to injuries. Earlier last month, Iyer was recalled into the ODI team by India’s new coach Gautam Gambhir; however, he had an unimpressive performance as Sri Lanka won the victorious series
Chopra argues that much has changed within the Indian team over the last six months which makes it difficult for Iyer to make a comeback now. It’s remarkable how things have turned around since Bangladesh beat us in their own backyard with Shreyas playing a significant role at that moment. We played extremely well because he even contributed viably at a point where we needed most although since then everything has shifted giving no hope for Shreyas regarding any Test match,” said Chopra on his YouTube Channel
The inclusion of Sarfaraz Khan, Dhruv Jurel and KL Rahul in the squad does not bode well for Iyer, Chopra said while asserting that still the matches they selected won’t be played by them all.
“So, where does Shreyas Iyer fit into this? Whoever is there will also not be able to play all the matches. The guys who are part of this team, which include Sarfaraz, KL Rahul and Dhruv Jurel, I believe they will only miss out on the 11.” he added.
Meanwhile, Iyer is currently heading India D in the ongoing Duleep Trophy where his team suffered a defeat against India C in their opening game.
According to a Times of India story Iyer was excluded from test cricket due to lack of consistency with his red ball batting, and poor performance during 2024 season
