Even though Yuvraj Singh hung up his cricket boots in 2019, he’s still making waves in the game, especially in limited-overs cricket, by mentoring young players from Punjab. He’s become a guiding hand for several up-and-coming cricketers, including Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma, Anmolpreet Singh, Prabhsimran Singh, and Ramandeep Singh. Shubman has become a well-known name, and Abhishek seems to be on the cusp of making a name for himself in the cricket scene. Anmolpreet and Prabhsimran are also starting to gather attention, showing they might soon shine in the cricket world. Ramandeep has especially benefited from Yuvraj’s support. He shared in a podcast with Raj Shamani that Yuvraj has been incredibly helpful, even going so far as to skip his own practice to help Ramandeep improve.
“He’s from Punjab, just like me, and I’m really fortunate that he’s had the chance to watch me bat. When they lifted the Covid restrictions, we practiced at the PCA Stadium, and Yuvi paaji was there too,” Ramandeep recalled. “One day, he missed a practice session just to help me out. He set up the center wicket, stood out there in the sun all afternoon like an umpire, and filmed my batting. He even took my number so he could send me those videos afterward and give me tips on what I needed to work on, what I was doing well, and what needed improvement.”
At just 27, Ramandeep pointed out how much Yuvraj cares about young talents from Punjab. He stressed that Yuvraj is always there for the younger cricketers, no matter how busy his schedule gets. “He has such a big heart. Honestly, he’s even a bigger person now than he was when he was actually playing. He goes out of his way to help us. He’s been there for Shubman, Abhishek, Anmolpreet, and Prabhsimran. When they face batting issues, they pick up the phone and call Yuvraj. I’ve never heard of him ignoring a single call. He’s always got time for everyone.”
Ramandeep is known for his ability to finish games and has a dream of achieving what his mentor did: hitting six sixes in an over. “Man, I really want to hit six sixes in an over. It’s not about breaking any record, especially Yuvraj’s. What he accomplished is something else altogether. I just feel like I’m missing something on that sixth ball. He knows it’ll happen when the time is right,” he explained.
