For India’s 2022 campaign in the Asia Cup, the BCCI named a 15-member squad on Monday. The return of former India captain Virat Kohli and India opener KL Rahul was cause for celebration for Indian cricket fans, but Jasprit Bumrah’s injury prevented him from participating, which added to the misery. But Kiran More, former chairman of the selection committee was utterly disappointed with the selection of veteran Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin.
In order to concentrate on improving his form, Kohli was given a break during India’s most recent series against the West Indies. He was also left off the roster for the team’s next match against Zimbabwe. Rahul, on the other hand, recovered from a groin injury sustained during the IPL 2022, which was followed by a recovery from the COVID-19 virus, which prevented him from playing for his country for more than two months.
After the Indian team was announced, Kiran More gave his thoughts on it in an interview with Star Sports. He stated that either Mohammed Shami, another seamer, or Axar Patel, an all-rounder spin option, might have been chosen instead of Ashwin.
He said, “I was surprised. How can Ashwin even come in this team? And every time. Even in the last World Cup, he was picked in the team and then did not play. Look at his IPL record, it is not that good. I really felt Shami should have taken that role or Axar Patel. And Axar has performed very well. Shami is my player, and he will go to the World Cup. I want wicket-taking bowlers. Shami can pick wickets with the new ball, in the middle overs and in the slog overs as well.”
