Former Indian captain and one of the legends of the game, Sunil Gavaskar has given his opinion on the omission of Shubman Gill from the Indian squad for the T20 World Cup 2024. He hinted that Gill’s up-and-down performance in IPL 2024 might be why he wasn’t in the main squad. Even though Gill didn’t make it to the main team, he was named among the four backup players going to the USA and West Indies with the team.
On Star Sports, Gavaskar praised the abundance of talented Indian players and said that even their reserve team could win the World Cup. He feels that the fierce competition for spots led to talented players like Gill not being included in the main squad.
“India is blessed with an abundance of talented cricketers. They have so much depth that even their second-string team could potentially win the World Cup with some luck. This creates a dilemma where accomplished players like Shubman Gill may miss out on selection, despite their capabilities,” said Gavaskar.
Rohit Sharma, the Indian captain, took one of the opening positions. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Virat Kohli could join him as his opening partner.

Gavaskar is concerned about Gill’s recent form, noting that he hasn’t been playing well in his recent matches. Although Gill has had a decent season overall, scoring 320 runs with a strike rate of 140.97 and an average of 35.56, Gavaskar highlighted that Gill hasn’t scored a fifty in his last four innings.
“I believe his current form was responsible for his exclusion. He has been inconsistent in the past several games. He had a great start. His varying performance in the past four games has cost the Gujarat Titans wins. Whenever he doesn’t fire, GT has lost,” opined Gavaskar.
