The Bombay High Court on Thursday issued notice to Indian cricketer Prithvi Shaw and the city police, seeking their response to a petition filed by social media influencer Sapna Gill. It sought quashing of the FIR lodged against him for allegedly assaulting and demanding money from the athlete.
The FIR was lodged in February this year after Sapna Gill and her friends argued outside a hotel in Mumbai over taking selfies with Shaw and his friends. Sapna Gill later filed a counter-complaint against the 23-year-old batsman.
On Thursday, a division bench of Justices SB Shukre and MM Sathe issued notice to the police and Shaw on Gill’s plea to quash the FIR against them and posted the matter for June. Gill’s counsel Ali Kashif Khan told the bench that the police had joined hands with the Mumbai-based cricketer and registered a false case against Sapna Gill.
Ali Kashif Khan sought direction from the police to obtain and preserve the CCTV footage from inside the hotel in Andheri to show what happened before the scuffle. Gill has also sought direction from the police in the petition not to file a charge sheet against him.
Prithvi Shaw had gone to dinner with his friends in a hotel. Then Sapna Gill and her friends demanded to take a selfie with the cricketer. Prithvi Shaw had said yes to selfies in the first instance. After this, his friends talked to the manager and urged him to maintain privacy. Meanwhile, Sapna and her friends again started demanding selfies from the cricketer.
In the second attempt, Prithvi Shaw refused to take a selfie. Then Sapna’s friends followed Prithvi Shaw’s friend’s car and vandalized it. It was said in the reports that Prithvi Shaw and his friends were also threatened to demand money by blackmailing them. Some videos surfaced, in which scenes of fighting among themselves were also seen.
Prithvi Shaw’s performance in the current IPL has been disappointing so far. The Delhi Capitals opener has featured in four matches and has managed only 34 runs. The Delhi Capitals team is worried about the poor form of Prithvi Shaw. Prithvi Shaw finds it difficult to retain his place in the playing 11.
