India’s head coach, Rahul Dravid, has shed light on including R Ashwin in the ODI squad, emphasizing that the seasoned spinner was always part of the contingency plans in case of injuries. Despite not featuring in the ODI format for an extended period, Dravid expressed confidence in Ashwin’s ability to perform.
Ashwin’s return to the ODI squad came as a response to an injury suffered by Axar Patel during the Asia Cup 2023, leading to his recall for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia.

“Having someone of Ashwin’s experience to come back is always good for us. Ashwin provides you that experience, that ability to be able to also contribute with the bat at No.8 and is someone that we always thought of in case there were certain injuries or certain opportunities opened up.”
“He was definitely someone who was always a part of our plans. I know he hasn’t played a lot of one-day cricket over the last bit, but someone of his experience probably can deal with that really well,” the coach added.
The experienced bowler’s last appearance in the ODI format dates back to January 2022, during a tour of South Africa. Ashwin’s return to the ODI squad adds depth to India’s bowling.
