Experienced Indian bowler Amit Mishra has expressed worries about Shubman Gill being chosen as the captain for the recent T20 series against Zimbabwe. Mishra said that Gill seemed unsure in his leadership role, even though the young player led India to a 4-1 victory in the series. Gill became the captain of the Gujarat Titans after Hardik Pandya went back to his former team, the Mumbai Indians, before the IPL 2024. Gill’s time as captain for the Titans was not very successful, with the team winning only 5 out of 14 matches and not making it to the playoffs for the first time, ending up in 8th place in the rankings.
The experienced bowler openly discussed the choice to make Gill the captain on Shubhankar Mishra’s YouTube podcast, suggesting that Ruturaj Gaikwad might have been a better option. “I wouldn’t have chosen Shubman as captain because I saw him in the IPL, and he doesn’t understand how to lead the team, he has no idea about captaincy,” Mishra commented.
“Being on the Indian team doesn’t automatically make him captain. Gill has performed well in the IPL in recent seasons and also did a good job with the Indian team. The team chose him as captain to help him gain leadership experience, which wasn’t clear when he was leading the Gujarat Titans in the IPL,” Mishra said.
Mishra pointed out other players who could be good leaders in T20 cricket, mentioning Sanju Samson, Rishabh Pant, and Ruturaj Gaikwad as possible choices. Gaikwad was included in the team for the matches in Zimbabwe, and Samson started playing from the second game.
Mishra said, “I’ve watched him (Shubman Gill) in the IPL, and he doesn’t understand how to be a captain. He has no clue about leading a team. The reason they chose him as captain is unclear. Just because he’s on the Indian team doesn’t mean he should be the captain.”
