Indian team won the opening test match of the two test match series against Bangladesh by 188 runs in Chattogram. The host had been chasing 513 runs in the second innings, but Indian bowlers restricted them to 324 runs. This test match brought some plus points for the Indian team; they enjoyed the first test match and showed solid performance with bat and ball without regular skipper Rohit Sharma.
Indian veteran batter Cheteshwar Pujara scored 90 and 102* runs and announced his comeback with a bang in the first and second innings, respectively; and another young star batter, Shubhman Gill, scored his maiden century in test cricket in the second innings against the host. Gill scored aggressively 110 runs off 152 balls, his innings laced with 10 fours and 3 sixes.
Shubhman Gill got a place in the playing XI for the first test match against Bangladesh because the regular skipper was injured, but now he is fit and will play the second test match. Now for the second test match, it is doubtful who will sit on the bench.
Looking at these issues, Indian former cricketer Mohammad Kaif believes that Shubhman Gill has done his work very well in the first test match, and now, for the next match Indian team must manage with four bowlers.
“It is a tough call because of their template in Test cricket. They are playing with five bowlers. You could have adjusted him if you were playing four bowlers. It won’t be easy to fit him in. He might have to wait if Rohit Sharma comes back. Shubman Gill has the technique, scores run consistently, and has the hunger. He scored in the IPL and won Gujarat Titans the title, has scored centuries in ODI and Test cricket, so his 2022 has been fantastic,” said Mohammad Kaif.
Further speaking on him, Kaif suggested that team management shouldn’t be this type of player, and they can take a chance on KL or Iyer to make his place in the playing XI.
“You will not be able to stop such a player for a long time, and whether you drop KL Rahul or Shreyas Iyer for that, the place will get created. He looks better and better whenever he is given the opportunity. The Test match is after three days, and Rohit Sharma might not come as well. He has the form. If I were Shubman Gill, I would not think my selection would happen; I have done my job. No one can stop him from becoming an all-format player,” Kaif further added.
Looking at the World Test Championship finals race, the men in blue must win the ongoing series by 2-0 and have to win at least three matches against Australia at home.
