Tom Moody praised Pat Cummins after SRH won by 6 wickets against CSK on April 5 in the IPL 2024 match at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. The victory moved Hyderabad to fifth place in the table with 4 points.
SRH displayed their strong batting skills once more in front of their home fans, dominating the CSK bowling lineup.
Moody mentioned that Cummins often opts for unconventional strategies and employs tactics that may not be initially considered. Before IPL 2024, Cummins had never captained a T20 team at any level. However, according to Moody, the Australian Test and ODI captain has managed to excel in the shortest format of the game as well.
After Sunrisers Hyderabad chose to bowl first, Cummins entrusted Abhishek Sharma with the ball instead of veteran Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who is skilled in swinging the ball. Commenting on this strategy, Moody remarked that Cummins demonstrates unconventional thinking as a captain.
“The one thing I like about Cummins is he is a bit like MS Dhoni. He is prepared to make a decision that most people don’t think about, but makes you feel like ‘Why didn’t I think about that?’ Like Abhishek Sharma over. It was quite an odd decision when you look at the other options they could have gone with,” Moody told ESPNcricinfo.
“You have arguably the best new ball bowler in IPL history in Bhuvneshwar Kumar. You have got an off spinner against left-handers. You think Markram would be another one. There was plenty of other ways he could have gone. But he committed to that and it looked like from the get go, he convinced himself that it was the right decision,” he added.
