Hayley Mathews half century helped West Indies to end this 12 year drought against South Africa

Hayley Matthews was the standout player again as the West Indies ended a 12-year wait for a series win, clinching a six-wicket victory over South Africa in the third T20I at Cave Hill on Monday, according to the ICC website. Matthews scored a fantastic half-century to lead the West Indies’ chase of South Africa’s 147/6, finishing with nine balls to spare. This win gave the West Indies a 2-1 series victory, marking the first time they’ve beaten South Africa in a T20I series since 2013.

South African player Miane Smit contributed with a solid 59 not out earlier in the match, helping her team set a competitive score. But Matthews was on fire, hitting nine fours and one big six, bringing the West Indies closer to victory. She was eventually dismissed for 65 by Sune Luus in the 16th over, giving South Africa a glimmer of hope. But Chinelle Henry, with a calm 20 not out, ensured the hosts crossed the finish line.

Despite the loss, South Africa captain Laura Wolvaardt found some silver linings. Of course, I’m disappointed with today’s result, especially since I thought we had enough runs, she said. But we didn’t bowl well enough, and they scored too many runs on the square. We made a few mistakes. Hayley played really well; she’s tough to get out. Overall, I believe we found some promising young talent who contributed well during this tour, she added.
