The WPL (Women’s Premier League) 2026 opened up with the competition introducing the face-off of the Mumbai Indians women against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru women. While RCB got a very close win, it was the MI captain, Harmanpreet Kaur, who became the talk of the day.
Notably, during the match, the Mumbai team came in to bat first and ended up scoring 157 runs at the end of the first inning. Harmanpreet Kaur was only able to contribute with 20 runs from 17 balls while playing a little cameo in the match. However, she created a big record in her short innings.
Harmanpreet Kaur was the one to score 20 runs to be declared the highest run getter in WPL history from the Indian side. It is an interesting fact that the experienced batter has now 871 runs against her name, beating Shafali Verma who has 865 runs to her name, being the second on that list. In total, Kaur is at the fourth position in the list of the most runs scored in WPL history, after Nat Sciver-Brunt, Ellyse Perry, and Meg Lanning.
Next, Mumbai Indians will face Delhi Capitals
The Mumbai Indians, the reigning champions, are ready to meet the three-time finalists, the Delhi Capitals women, in their next match of the season. The two teams will clash at the Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai on January 10.
This would be the first game for the Delhi Capitals women this season. The team will be captained by the Indian star batter, Jemimah Rodrigues. The team had been led by Meg Lanning for the first three seasons and they had reached all three finals, but the trophy has not been awarded to them yet. Capitals will indeed aim for a better performance in 2026 and they will also try to lift the coveted trophy.
