The rise of Young batter Shubhman Gill in every format of cricket has put a question mark on other players’ positions as an opener in the team. Like the place of KL Rahul in test cricket as an opener in danger. And in the upcoming series, it will be a big decision for the Indian skipper and head coach to select the other opener with skipper Rohit Sharma.
Looking at this, former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh provided noteworthy comments on the opening pair in the upcoming series against Australia. Harbhajan has picked Gill as the second opener batter with the Skipper Rohit Sharma. He shared his thoughts on his YouTube Channel and explained why to choose Gill over Rahul.
“The opening partnership is the most important thing. Openers set the tone in any series. I think India’s openers in the Australia series should be Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill. The form he is in, Gill is on another level. Even though KL Rahul is a top player, his stats (across all formats in 2022) are not favoring him now. At the same time, Gill is in the form of his life. He has shattered multiple records in recent months,” said Harbhajan Singh on his youtube channel.
Further, Harbhajan added that if the men in blue want to win this test series, Shubhman must play as the opener batter. “If Team India wants to win this Test series, then Shubman Gill should open with Rohit Sharma,” Harbhajan shared his observation.
Harbhajan Singh explained that after so many runs, he deserved to be in the playing XI. He has that type of confidence that he should be in the team.
“After scoring so many runs, I think he deserves to be in the Indian playing XI not for just one game. I think India should stick with Shubman Gill throughout the series. If he plays in the form and confidence that he is in, Gill will score plenty of runs for India. So I hope he gets to play,” Harbhajan added.
Shubhman Gill is the youngest Indian batter to score a hundred in all three formats for the Indian team. He has played 13 test matches so far, scoring 736 runs at an average of 32.00. The Indian team will clash with the Australian for the 1st test match on 9th February in Nagpur.
