Australian cricketer Glenn Maxwell announced his retirement from ODI cricket on Monday. He started playing for Australia back in 2012 against Afghanistan, and in total, he played 149 ODIs, scoring 3,990 runs with an average of 33.81 and a strike rate of 126.70. Maxwell also took 77 wickets with his off-spin and made 91 catches.
In his farewell chat with George Bailey, the Chair of Selectors, Maxwell shared his thoughts on the future. They discussed the 2027 World Cup, and Maxwell said, “I don’t think I’m going to make that. It’s time to start planning for younger guys to take over the role. He wanted to make sure there was enough time for them to settle in.
Maxwell emphasized that he wouldn’t leave his spot unless he felt he wasn’t up to the game anymore, as he didn’t want to just stay on for selfish reasons. He played key roles in Australia’s ODI World Cup victories in 2015 and 2023, and in the recent tournament, he had a memorable innings where he scored 201 not out in a tough chase against Afghanistan, despite dealing with severe cramps.
