The India National Cricket Team is inarguably experiencing a difficult time in the Test cricket phase under coach Gautam Gambhir. Since the arrival of Gautam Gambhir as India’s head coach in mid-2024, the situation has not changed for the team, particularly in Tests and ODI matches.
The Indian cricket team, after winning the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 earlier this year, has been among the top contenders but unfortunately, they faced setbacks with series losses in Sri Lanka and Australia in ODIs, which were quite embarrassing. Gautam Gambhir’s track record across all formats has been outstanding, but the results in Test cricket are equally overwhelming.
Gautam Gambhir’s coaching continues to be a topic of debate as India’s Test predicament worsens.
The Indian cricket team suffered a 0-3 home Test series loss to New Zealand, which was their first at home in 12 years, and then they lost 1-3 in Australia, giving the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to the Australians. On the positive side, they managed to equal the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2-2 in England.
Under Gambhir’s coaching, the Indian team won 7 matches, lost 9, and 2 were drawn from the total of 18 tests. The current two-match Test series against South Africa has seen the home team suffer a loss in the first game by 30 runs at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. They are now facing South Africa in the last Test at Guwahati.
As the Indian team is on the brink of yet another unfortunate whitewash at home in Tests, the coach Gautam Gambhir is facing mounting pressure due to the miserable batting display of the Indian team in the first innings in Guwahati. Doubts regarding Gambhir’s tactics and team combinations have arisen.
Iceland Cricket ruthlessly roasts Gautam Gambhir during India’s Test slump
Iceland Cricket, the team notorious for its witty and naughty social media presence, did not spare Gautam Gambhir and took a brutal shot during India’s Test fall. Responding playfully to India’s Test defeats, the European associate nation sarcastically said Gambhir would not be their future national team coach.
Through a humorous post on social media, Iceland Cricket mocked India’s situation under Gambhir by declaring that their national coaching spot is already taken and the team has a win rate of 75% in 2025.
Their account posted on X: “No, Gautam Gambhir will not be our new national team coach, to all our fans. That position is already taken, and we had a win rate of 75% in our matches in 2025.”
Iceland’s mockery highlights India’s escalating Test crisis
It was merely a poke from the European associate but the message was quite significant indeed. When the smallest of associate teams feels that it can afford to mock the coach of a giant team, it indicates how significantly India’s Test problems are being acknowledged globally.
The main reason for India’s debacle versus South Africa and Iceland Cricket’s fresh ridicule has opened up the discussions once more about the team’s selection, uncertain strategy, and an overly aggressive batting style that leads to sudden collapses in both home and away games.
Interestingly, the South African team after scoring 489 runs in the first innings, dismissed the home team for a mere 201 runs and now they are at 66/1 in the second and final Test at Guwahati.
The visitors have already amassed a lead of over 350 runs and they are cruising toward a massive win in India.
