Former Zimbabwe player and team manager passes away

Mohammed Ahmed Meman, a former Zimbabwe off-spinner and team manager known as Babu, died at 73 on Wednesday morning in Leicester after being sick for a while.

Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) said in a statement that they were very shocked and saddened to learn about the death of Mohammed Ahmed Meman, a former Zimbabwe international cricketer and national team manager.

Meman played one One-Day International for Zimbabwe against India in the 1987 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. He scored 19 runs in that game.

From 1977 to 1980, he also played for Shropshire in England’s Minor Counties Championship. During his time with the county, Babu scored 888 runs, including two centuries, and took 55 wickets in 32 matches, showing he was a true all-rounder.

Meman was Zimbabwe’s national team manager from 1992 to 2006, leading the team as it began playing Test matches. After his playing days, he also helped the game by being a selector and helping to form the national team.

ZC said in a statement that they are very thankful for Babu’s lasting contributions to cricket in the country, both on and off the field. They will always remember his passion, humility, and commitment.

ZC ended by saying that they send their deepest condolences to his wife, Aisha, and children – Iqbal, Fazila, and Sadiya – as well as to his extended family, friends, and everyone who knew and loved him. They are thinking of them during this hard time and hope his soul rests in peace.
