Former IPL winning coach makes a bold prediction regarding Punjab kings retention

Tom Moody, a former cricketer from Australia, has suggested that the Punjab Kings should avoid keeping any capped players before the IPL 2025 auction. Moody says that the franchise should consider using the right to match option for Arshdeep Singh, Sam Curran, Kagiso Rabada and others, even though there have been suggestions of PBKS retaining Arshdeep Singh only. The coach, who has won the IPL trophy, further stated that Jitesh Sharma, a young wicket-keeper batter could also be an important player for the team during the RTM card strategies.

As for uncapped players, the all-rounder Harpreet Brar and the hard-hitting batsman Shashank Singh were selected by Moody as the leading options. Nevertheless, there are rumors that Shashank may choose to include himself in the bidding since auctioning himself may provide him with a more lucrative offer.

“For Punjab Kings, I don’t think I would retain any players, certainly not capped players, but I’d be looking to use the right-to-match option for players like Arshdeep Singh, Sam Curran, Rabada. I would use the right-to-match card for Jitesh Sharma as well in the auction. For example, with respect to the uncapped players, there are couple of good players that I want to get before the auction: Shashank Singh who is a powerful middle order hitter and had a good season last year and Harpreet Brar the left arm spinner,” said Moody, speaking to Star Sports.

On the other hand, the retention deadline for players ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction has been set for October 31. In that regard, it is that period when all the ten teams will be in the process of solidifying their plans concerning who to retain. The winners of the IPL 2024 edition, Kolkata Knight Riders, find themselves also compiling their own retention list.

However, according to IANS, sources are indicating that the retention status of their title-winning captain Shreyas Iyer is currently on the ambiguous side. The retention factor applies in this case as the core team on the title defense includes the West Indians Andre Russell and Sunil Narine, middle-order batter Rinku Singh, wrist-spinner Varun Chakaravarthy, fast-bowling all-rounder Harshit Rana who received his maiden call for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series and others.

While Narine and Russell excelled with both bat and ball as the franchise’s cores, Chakravarthy was the highest wicket-taker in the spin department with 21 wickets while conceding 8.04 runs per over. Those performances paved his way for being back into the Indian team for the T20Is against Bangladesh this month and is selected for next month’s South Africa series
