Recently, two top wicket-keeper batters, Nicholas Pooran and Heinrich Klaasen, announced they’re stepping away from international cricket. It’s surprising since Pooran is just 29 and Klaasen is 33, raising eyebrows about their early exits from national teams. This has sparked a conversation around the ongoing clash between international cricket and T20 franchise leagues, where many players are raking in much more cash.
Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra shared his thoughts on this in a video. He said, “Players think like this: they have a short career. Just like food has a ‘best before’ date, every player has their own time limit.” Chopra pointed out that if players don’t maximize their opportunities while they can, they might find themselves regretting it later. He mentioned that for guys like Pooran and Klaasen, going for T20 leagues could ensure a good financial future.
Chopra also noted that it’s a bit easier for players from wealthier cricket boards to stick with international cricket. For South African cricketers like Klaasen or West Indians like Pooran, the paycheck from national teams doesn’t match their potential earnings elsewhere. If they’re part of a poorer cricket board, leaving for better-paying gigs makes more sense, he explained.
He mentioned that some cricket boards are just strapped for cash, which puts them in a tough spot. In places like the West Indies, financial issues can create drama and frustration. If a player feels unsupported, they’re likely to move on.
Both Pooran and Klaasen are set to keep playing in various T20 leagues like the IPL, SA20, ILT20, and the CPL, where they earn over Rs 20 crores (around USD 2.3 million) just from their IPL deals.
