Faf du Plessis is set to captain the Super Kings franchise, Stephen Fleming to be the coach

Faf du Plessis will play as the captain of the Johannesburg Super Kings in the CSA T20 competition. The team selected Du Plessis, the former captain of South Africa, as one of its five direct signings, paying US$375,000. For $400,000, Moeen Ali’s services were hired by the franchise, which is controlled by Chennai Super Kings Sports Limited, the IPL team’s proprietors.

Du Plessis served as a player with Chennai Super Kings for two periods, from 2011 to 2015 and subsequently from 2018 to 2021, totaling 100 games. In 2021, Moeen also joined the Chennai Super Kings as a player.

A few of the coaching staff are also veteran Chennai Super Kings players. At Johannesburg, Eric Simons will serve as his assistant and Stephen Fleming will serve as the head coach. Albie Morkel, a former CSK all-rounder, is also close to signing a contract with the team to work as an assistant coach. In 77 IPL games, the 41-year-old played for the MS Dhoni-led team, which won the championship twice in 2010 and 2011.

Maheesh Theekshana ($200,000), a Sri Lankan offspinner, has been signed by the Johannesburg team as another member of Chennai’s 2022 squad. The squad has also brought in West Indies all-rounder Romario Shepherd ($175,000) and South African fast bowler Gerald Coetzee ($50,000), the latter of whom is a development player.

Prior to the auction, each of the six franchises of the CSA T20 league is permitted to sign five contracts. The Cricket South Africa (CSA) has given their approval to the marquee list of 30 international players. The team’s first core group of five players must also consist of a local player and a local uncapped player.
