Afghanistan got their T20 World Cup campaign off to a fantastic start. They defeated the debutants Uganda by a massive margin of 125 runs defending the total of 184 runs comfortably. Fazalhaq Farooqi won the player of the match for becoming only the second bowler from Afghanistan to pick up a five-wicket haul as he ended with magical figures of 5/9 in his four overs.
After being asked to bat first, Afghanistan’s openers set a record by adding 154 runs for the first wicket earlier in the match. Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran amused themselves by scoring runs and making fun of the opposing bowlers. Gurbaz hit a career-high 76 runs, but his partner was removed after 70 runs, and Ugandan captain Brian Masaba ended the partnership.
After this, though, Uganda produced an incredible recovery, taking five wickets in the final 33 balls and giving not a single boundary, limiting Afghanistan to just 183 runs in their 20 overs with five wickets lost. Uganda gave down under duress, unable to withstand more of Farooqi’s ball heroics.
Before eventually being bowled out for 58 runs in 16 overs, they were 18/5 in less than five overs at one point. In the T20 World Cup, he also surpassed Mujeeb Ur Rahman’s record for the best numbers for Afghanistan. With the fourth-best numbers in the super event, he concluded the game with 5/9 in his four overs.
