England’s hopes for a Champions Trophy medal have suffered a devastating blow, for their right-arm quick Brydon Carse has been ruled out of the tournament with a toe injury and will be replaced by Rehan Ahmed. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) released a statement confirming Carse’s exit from the tournament: “Durham and England bowling all-rounder Brydon Carse has been ruled out for the remainder of the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy due to his left toe injury.”
Carse was injured on the field while playing for England against arch-ripper Australia during the ICC Champions Trophy group B match held in Lahore on Saturday. He missed England’s training session on Monday because of the toe injury.
He was thought to be fit enough to play against Australia in England’s tournament opener, but could not find his rhythm. Carse ended up being the costliest bowler in the field at an economy rate of 9.85 while Australia chased 352 to break the record.
His toe injury had originated previously as just a blister during England’s previous white-ball tour of India leading to the ICC Champions Trophy, as stated by ESPNcricinfo. The injury would require stitches and kept him from playing for England in their last two ODIs against India.
Because of the worsening injury, he was withdrawn from England’s Champions Trophy squad prior to their second group match against Afghanistan on Wednesday in Lahore.
Rehan, who was called in as a replacement for Carse, did not get used in England’s squad during the white-ball tour of India. His inclusion gives additional strength to England’s spin attack, which features Adil Rashid as the only first-choice spinner.
