Shubman Gill’s recent performance suggests a promising start for Indian cricket. His batting was instrumental in India’s victory over England in the second Test at Edgbaston. Gill scored 430 runs across both innings, helping India defeat England by a large margin of 336 runs.
After the win, former Indian cricketer Dinesh Karthik noted similarities between Gill’s mindset and Virat Kohli’s when Kohli first became India’s Test captain. Karthik recalled a conversation with Kohli about captaincy and pointed out the parallels with Gill.
I spoke with him (Kohli) recently, and the topic of captaincy came up. He mentioned that while he is known as a good Test player and enjoyed Test batting, he felt that becoming captain was the best thing that happened to him. Gill said something similar, Karthik said on the Sky Sports Cricket podcast.
Karthik then shared his conversation with Gill after he became Test captain, highlighting its similarity to Kohli’s viewpoint.
He (Gill) mentioned that he now considers what the team needs first, instead of focusing solely on his individual performance as a batter. I thought that was noteworthy, Karthik added.
Kohli is considered one of India’s best Test captains, with the most Test wins as captain. He led India in 68 Tests and won 40 of them.
Gill’s captaincy has begun well, especially considering his batting. The 25-year-old, India’s youngest Test captain in the 21st century, has scored 585 runs in the first two Tests against England.
In his first four innings, Gill has scored scores of 269, 161, and 147, leading the team in runs each time.
Due to this, Gill’s Test batting average has increased from just over 35 to almost 43 in just two matches.
Like Kohli, Gill is the second Indian captain to score three centuries in their first four Test innings as captain.
