Many conversations have been sparked off about the retention policy as the widely anticipated IPL mega auction approaches, and latest reports suggest that some interesting developments may be on the cards.
Franchise owners are eagerly waiting for BCCI’s announcement of new retention policy ahead of the 2025 season of the Indian Premier League. However, according to Cricbuzz’s report, it is believed that this announcement could be delayed until the end of this month possibly.
The forthcoming IPL mega-auction could act as a platform for all franchises to revamp their teams entirely in order to challenge for trophies in long-term terms or it could allow specific few franchises to keep their superstar players.
And as if to make their fans and supporters rejoice, there are also reports circulating through Cricbuzz that the BCCI is contemplating a highly debated move of registering retired international players as uncapped .
So why wouldn’t this move CSK advantage? The answer is as simple as that: retaining their star MS Dhoni becomes much easier and cost-effective.
But how? In previous retention rules for uncapped players, they could be kept for Rs 4 crores only whereas if we take into account what CSK paid in 2022 that was Rs 12 crores to keep him, you now have an idea.
CSK would want Dhoni’s retention guaranteed because it is vital for both financial and career reasons too. And in fact, CSK officials have claimed that if Dhoni plays next season he would still be one of its retentions even if BCCI allows only 2 retentions like it was in the past years as there is no denying how much he creates such charisma around himself; pangs of admiration? All eyes on him as Captain Cool.
However, as the IPL 2025 player rules and retention strategy are in the process of being fixed, Dhoni himself said that he would wait and see how the rules unfold before making a call on whether to carry on playing.
“We have plenty of time for that. We will need to observe what decision they make concerning player retention among other things. It is not up to us at this moment. Once they come up with concrete laws and instructions regarding those matters, I will decide but it must serve the team’s interests best,” Dhoni stated during a promotional event in Hyderabad earlier in August this year.
