The India vs New Zealand ODI series is just hours away, but the injury problems do not seem to be stopping. The home team, in particular, has been hit hard. There were already concerns over Matt Henry’s availability, while India also have players missing through injury or being rested as a precaution. After several setbacks during the T20I series, another major concern has now emerged for New Zealand.

Devon Conway and Matt Henry collided during fielding practice ahead of the first ODI. According to reports, both were taken to hospital for checks. Henry appeared to be okay after concussion testing, but Conway needs further assessment.

As per reports, Conway is almost set to miss the first ODI against India, although official confirmation is still awaited. The opening match will be played at Eden Park in Auckland on November 4.

Latest Update: Devon Conway is ruled out from 1st ODI.

Devon Conway Injury: Santner Stresses Caution

New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner said head injuries must be taken seriously and confirmed that Conway would undergo further assessment. His comments suggest the hosts are preparing for the possibility of playing without their opening batter.

With the match scheduled for the following day, Conway has little time to recover and receive clearance. There are also concerns that he could miss further matches, depending on the outcome of those assessments.

Henry’s initial checks offered some relief, but Conway’s situation leaves New Zealand facing another difficult selection decision.

Tim Seifert in Line to Replace Conway

Santner identified Tim Seifert as the backup batting option. If Conway is unavailable, Seifert is in line to take his place at the top of the order.

Conway’s likely absence would be a major blow. Alongside Daryl Mitchell, he is one of New Zealand’s most important ODI batters. His consistency and ability to build an innings make him especially valuable in this format.

New Zealand are already without Rachin Ravindra and Mark Chapman because of shoulder and hamstring injuries respectively. Their bowling resources have also been affected, with Will O’Rourke, Ben Sears and Zak Foulkes unavailable when the ODI squads were announced.

India have their own concerns. Prasidh Krishna has been ruled out of the ODI series as he continues recovering from a hamstring injury, while Jasprit Bumrah has been rested.

For New Zealand, another injury to an established player adds to the pressure. It also gives Seifert and the other players coming into the side an opportunity to prove themselves against India.
