Jaiswal made his entrance onto his first tour of Australia with a grand century-whopping-161 in India’s second innings in Perth. But then, he continued the trend of low scores in Adelaide and Brisbane, including a first-ball duck. Jaiswal has shown promise since his Test debut in 2023 silencing a terrific series against England at home earlier this year. However, things have not been very easy in Australia for the 22-year-old young cricketer.
As Indians prepare for the Boxing Day Test, this is the stage where Jaiswal could well justify himself back into runs, and the experienced Indian batter Cheteshwar Pujara imparts some valuable tips to the young boy. Speaking to Star Sports, Pujara said that Jaiswal seems hasty in his batting against the Australians. Instead, the batter from Mumbai would need to give himself some time and play the ball on its merit.
” He needs to give himself a bit more time; the way he is playing, he is trying to rush things. He is trying to play shots a little more. He should only play shots if he is quite sure about it, especially in the first 5-10 overs because it seems that he is in a hurry to score runs, he wants a quick start, and he wants to score those first 15-20 runs quickly,” Pujara said.
‘What I have come to realize being an opener in Test cricket is not going out to look for balls; one plays what comes up. Even aggression could not prompt an aggressive player like Virender Sehwag to play stroke when the delivery was not pitched in his zone.
“There are a lot of aggressive batters and openers in Test cricket today, but at least they play the shots when the ball is pitched in the hitting zone, but this is how it looks like Yashasvi is trying to get converted shots, he is trying to drive the non-up balls,” he added.
Pujara is of the view that Jaiswal needs to be calm and have a bit more time in the middle with his defense if he wants to do well in Australia.
“That will be a bit in his mind, a bit calming down, he needs to spend a bit more time, he needs to show some confidence in his defense, then that is when he is going to come around with some shot-playing deliveries because the moment when you show some respect to the bowlers and you defend well then they will look forward for a wicket and gradually start off pitching it a bit up and that’s where you can play those drives,” concluded Pujara.
