Chamari Athapaththu’s Record-breaking Performance Secures Sri Lanka’s Triumph over South Africa

Sri Lanka’s women’s team made history at Buffalo Park as they defeated South Africa in the third T20 by four wickets. Sri Lanka won the Twenty20 series by 2-1.

This is Sri’ Lanka’s first ever victory against South Africa in any format.

Chasing a target of 156, Sri Lanka had a poor start to their run chase as opener Vishmi Ganuratne departed cheaply in the second over.

However, their Sri Lankan skipper, Chamari Athapaththu, took the initiative as she, along with Harshita Samrawickrama, added 97 runs for the second wicket.

Chamari was the one who was taking on the bowlers, scoring 73 out of just 46 deliveries. The Southpaw hit seven boundaries and five sixes in her innings.

It was Chamari Athapaththu’s knock that gave Harshita time to settle down at the crease.

After spending some time on the wicket, she went on to target bowlers from the other end. However, Chamari Athapaththu got out in the 13th over. The Sri Lankan team lost a few more wickets, but Harshita Samrawickrama scored 54*, helping her team chase the target.

Chamari Athapaththu was awarded Player of the Match for her exceptional knock. On the other hand, South African skipper Laura Wolvaardt won Player of the Series, scoring 158 runs in three matches.
