Chamari Athapaththu breaks these records against Malaysia

Sri Lankan captain Chamari Athapaththu has broken many records while scoring a century against Malaysia in the ongoing Women’s Asia Cup 2024. Athapaththu is on a remarkable scoring streak, having hit her second T20I century in just six matches of this format.

Athapaththu has played a key role in her team’s recent victories. She took on the responsibility again in her team’s second match of the Asia Cup 2024 against Malaysia. Athapaththu scored an impressive 199 runs off 69 balls without being dismissed, leading the Sri Lankan team to a total of 184/4 in their 20 overs.

Athapaththu has made history as the first player in the Women’s Asia Cup to score a century in this format. The previous highest score in the Women’s tournament was held by former Indian captain Mithali Raj, who scored 97* during the 2018 Asia Cup against Malaysia.

Highest individual scores in Women’s T20 Asia Cup:

1 – Chamari Athapaththu scored 119 not out against Malaysia in July 2024.

2 – Mithali Raj scored 97 not out against Malaysia in June 2018.

3 – Harshitha Samarawickrama scored 81 against Thailand in October 2024.

4 – Jemimah Rodrigues scored 76 against Sri Lanka in October 2022.

5 – Jemimah Rodrigues scored 75 not out against UAE in October 2022.

The Sri Lankan captain has also become the first player to score a century in Women’s T20 Internationals in Sri Lanka. Before this, no woman had scored 100 runs or more in this format in Sri Lanka. This is also her best score in this format, surpassing her 113-run performance against Australia women in September 2019.

Athapaththu holds the record for hitting the most sixes in a single innings during a Women’s Asia Cup game. She hit seven sixes in her impressive performance, which is four more than the previous record held by Shafali Verma.
