History was made by Cameron Green by becoming the most expensive overseas player in IPL history. Not surprisingly, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) bought him after an intense auction of INR 25.20 crore at the IPL 2026 auction with Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
After KKR got him, KKR’s head coach Abhishek Nayar revealed their intentions by going for Green, who is to be a batting all-rounder. He assured that the Australian all-rounder would bat in the top three and that Sunil Narine will not be opening the next season.
Evidently, KKR have chosen to end the Narine opening experience as the team suffered greatly last season. Narine’s vulnerabilities are now very clear, and the teams have become clever enough to zero in on his batting’s weak points.
Their strategizing indicates that they are looking for a complete change in ideas at the top, and the Knight Riders have brought in two power hitters-Cameron Green and Finn Allen. Both are likely to be in the playing XI next season and will be an important part of the top order as KKR changes their strategy.
Reasons why Cameron Green should be in the top order for KKR in the IPL 2026
There are different arguments in favor of Cameron Green being a more suitable candidate for the top order, and the major one is his capacity to whack the pacers and good with the spinning ball. He always manages to score big when he is given a few balls to face in the top order, more so in the T20 format.
In IPL, he has scored a total of 488 runs (40.66 average and 157.92 strike rate) in 14 innings including 2 fifties and 1 century, while batting in the top three. In other batting positions, Green has a total of 219 runs (43.80 average and 145.03 strike rate) in 14 innings with no fifties.
Australia have also experimented with Cameron Green in the top order due to his extraordinary ability to handle fast bowling, as he can dominate hard lengths and protect spin-bowlers around him. At KKR, he is a perfect fit because of the spot created by the release of Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Quinton de Kock.
Allen might be the one responsible for keeping wickets, and the probable top three of KKR will be: Ajinkya Rahane, Finn Allen, and Cameron Green with Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Rinku Singh, and Rovman Powell. Their batting unit is taking good shape gradually, even though they had to leave out many players prior to the auction.
