Mahmudullah, Bangladesh’s experienced all-rounder, has declared his international cricket retirement, thereby ending a distinguished 17-year career. Thirty-nine years old, he thanked his fans, coaches, and team members on Wednesday. On Facebook, Mahmudullah wrote, “I have chosen to step down from international cricket.” I want to especially thank my fans, my coaches, and all of my teammates who have always had my back. Most of all to my brother Emdad Ullah, whom I have been coached and mentored since childhood, my parents, my in-laws—especially my father-in-law—get quite many thanks.”
He also thanked his wife and kids, saying they were his &quo; support system through thick as well as thin. “He said his child Raeid will miss seeing him in the red and green jersey of Bangladesh in a heartfelt letter.
Mahmudullahs’s choice was not completely surprising. He had earlier let the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) know he would not be looking for a central contract past February 2025. Mushfiqur Rahim’s retirement is next, given that after the qualification for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, his place in the side was, like Mahmudullah’s, under review.
Mahmudullah, one of Bangladesh’s most consistent middle-order bats, is the only cricketer from the country to have hit three centuries in ODI World Cups. Against England and New Zealand, two of these came in the 2015 edition—where he played an important part in Bangladesh&’ quarterfinal run. His third ton arrived in the 2023 version, therefore strengthening his heritage on the most grand stage.
The career figures of Mahmudullah say volumes about his affect on cricket in Bangladesh. Playing crucial parts in many wins, he represented the country in 239 ODIs, 50 Tests, and 141 T20Is.
Whether it was his cool batting under pressure, his off-spin bowling, or his guidance, he stayed a foundation in Bangladesh’s cricket journey.
