According to BCCI sources, the last week of November or early December will see the holding of the super auction for the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) on Wednesday. They said that a couple of days later, the Board for Cricket Council of India (BCCI) would release the rules and regulations for the same.
In the last ten years, the Indian Premier League has held two large auctions at four-year intervals. The first major auction was held in 2014, then in 2018–when the Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings made their comeback after a two-year suspension period.
With regards to developments regarding the next mega auction, sources close to BCCI confirmed to IANS that it is likely to be scheduled sometime from November end or early December. “IPL 2025 auction will take place in November end or early December this year. Rules of it will be out shortly,” BCCI sources told IANS
Due to the covid-19 outbreak, the year 2021 mega auction was forced to be delayed for an entire year. In both instances, teams extended their players contracts by an additional year.
The upcoming IPL mega sale will likely be a two-day affair like the February 2022 auction and the December 2023 and 2024 auctions.
In the last mega auction that took place in 2022, IPL teams were allowed to keep four players. As the three-year cycle is reaching its end, franchises have divergent views on what is the best number of retained players. While some teams are advocating raising the retention cap to maybe eight players, others are fine with four or five as maximum limits.
