New Zealand’s former skipper Daniel Vettori has been appointed as the new head coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the IPL. He takes over from Brian Lara, who had replaced Tom Moody ahead of the 2023 IPL season. Despite the change in the coaching staff, SRH’s fortunes did not improve, as they finished last (tenth) in IPL 2023 with four wins and ten losses.
Daniel Vettori has a rich coaching background in T20 cricket. He previously served as the head coach of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) from 2014 to 2018, helping the team reach the playoffs in 2015 and the final in 2016. Additionally, Vettori has been the head coach of the Birmingham Phoenix men’s team in The Hundred tournament.
Before joining SRH, Vettori worked as the assistant coach of the Australia men’s team since May 2022. He also previously served as the spin bowling consultant with the Bangladesh team.
With Vettori’s vast coaching experience and expertise in T20 cricket, SRH will hope for an improved performance in the upcoming IPL season. The franchise will also look to rebuild and strengthen their squad during the IPL player auction to bolster their chances in the highly competitive league.
Brian Lara’s stint as the head coach of SRH may have been short-lived, but his reputation as one of the greatest cricketers of all time remains intact. The franchise’s decision to bring in a new coach is part of their efforts to find the right balance and turn their fortunes around in the IPL.
Fans will eagerly watch how Vettori’s coaching strategies and leadership impact the team’s performance in the IPL, and SRH will aim to make a strong comeback under his guidance.
