Breaking News: Australian team receives a massive boost ahead of the ICC champions trophy as they unveil their final 15

Pat Cummins will resume his country’s ICC Champions Trophy inaugural journey in Pakistan next month just before the team undertakes a Test tour of Sri Lanka since missing both tours due to injury when Josh Hazlewood was named in the squad announced by Cricket Australia Monday. The Australian skipper opted to miss out on their preparation tour of Sri Lanka starting later this month as he was on leave because of his second child born. He must be carrying some knee niggle because it was evident when he managed to bowl and play in the last series at the end of March.

Tracing the recurrence of injury detected before the first home game coming up against India was the factor responsible for his unsuitability in the game. Hazlewood was therefore named among the 15-man preliminary team for the two-time champions after a hamstring and side strains forced him out of the final two Tests against India during the Australian summer.

Cruelly dumped was Jake Fraser-McGurk, returning to domestic cricket for Victoria after that poor series form as opener for Australia during the latest ODI series against Pakistan.

“This being said, it is a well-balanced and experienced squad with most of this side coming off the back of the previous ODI World Cup, the West Indies series, the successful English tour last year, and more recently the Pakistan home series,” said Chairman of Selectors George Bailey.

“It carries multiple alternatives concerning team management for touring against the obvious and possible circumstances in Pakistan.”

The 8 nation marquee tournament is set to go underway from February 19 in the UAE and Pakistan.

Australia squad: Pat Cummins (capt), Alex Carey, Nathan Ellis, Aaron Hardie, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Marnus Labuschagne, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Matt Short, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Marcus Stoinis, Adam Zampa
