BCCI vice President drops a massive statement on Jaiswal’s controversial decision

On Monday, Rajeev Shukla, vice-president of BCCI, lashed out at the third umpire Saikat Sharfuddoula for Yashasvi Jaiswal’s controversial out on the last day of the Boxing Day Test against Australia at Melbourne, saying the India opener was “clearly not out”.

The context of the event was this: Jaiswal was batting on 84 when Australia captain Pat Cummins’ down-the-leg snorter cramped him trying the hook, and the home doubled up instantly in appeals for a caught behind as Alex Carey completed a tumbling take.

On-field umpire Joel Wilson did not budge, so the Australians resorted to DRS and the third umpire Sharfuddoula ruled Jaiswal out, though no edge was registered on Snicko, on the basis of visible deflection.

“Yashasvi Jaiswal was clearly not out. Third umpire should have taken note of what technology was suggesting. While over ruling field umpire third umpire should have solid reasons,” senior BCCI official Shukla tweeted

Jaiswal’s wicket was something of a door left ajar for Australia in the last session of this fourth and final Test, and the hosts slammed shut that door by sending packing every last Indian wicket to canter to an easy 184-run victory, with it going 2-1 up in the five-match series.

This is just about as far from the first Test in Perth, when opener KL Rahul’s dismissal is still the shit being talked about.

The home team used DRS to overturn Kettleborough’s ruling when on-field umpire made the ruling on Rahul’s behalf after an appeal from the Australia team.

Without the split-screen view which would have cleared the doubt over whether the ball grazed the bat or the Snicko reacted to its hit on the pads, the third umpire Richard Illingworth overturned the call.
