With the announcement of retention rules expected from the BCCI before the mega-auctions, franchise owners are eagerly waiting for it as they approach the 2025 season of IPL.
It is reported by Cricbuzz that BCCI might hold back on announcing till end of month, probably making an announcement during the Annual General Meeting (AGM) scheduled for 29th September.
Initial plans were to have the announcement done by the end of August but franchise officials are being told that there may be a delay in releasing final retention rules.
In a long-term view, this forthcoming mega-auction could serve as a chance for all franchises to totally revamp their squad with an aim to compete for titles. However, because they haven’t heard about rules yet, franchises must exercise patience and trust the policy will favor them.
It was also stated in the report that there would be a deadline for all teams to finalize their retentions by November 15th and that Right-to-Match card will be among the features of the mega-auction that is scheduled to take place in December 2024.
For several well-known players are already expected to be let go from their clubs; this might provide an opportunity for other franchises can acquire some good players to reinforce their own.
Rahul Dravid’s appointment as Rajasthan Royals’ Chief Coach has been one of the notable changes which were announced earlier after his tenure as Head Coach of Team India during the T20 World Cup winning campaign held in Barbados 2024.
It would be interesting watching how franchises select retainers based on yet-to-be-released guidelines while some sides may have no option but releasing quality players who might find themselves playing elsewhere.
