The Indian Express reports that Pakistan intends to use the ‘Force Majeure’ clause as a legal defense against potential ICC penalties which would result from their T20 World Cup 2026 match boycott against India. The match between Pakistan and India will result in two points being awarded to India if Pakistan decides to boycott the match on February 15 while the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will incur financial penalties. The clause defines “unforeseeable circumstances” which can lead to contract non-fulfillment as its essential content. The report claimed that the PCB may look to justify its decision by citing the social media post by the Pakistan government regarding the ‘boycott’ and arguing that they were instructed to take the decision. Pakistan will present their argument to human rights organizations by declaring that they are experiencing an extraordinary crisis according to sources.
An official said that they needed to use this final option because they had no other justification to avoid playing against India.
The BCCI believes that the PCB presents an unconvincing case according to their assessment.
The BCCI source told The Indian Express that Pakistan showed no issues with playing against India during the Under-19 World Cup which took place on the same day their government announced the T20 World Cup match boycott. The Pakistan Cricket Board and the Pakistan government operate as two separate entities because the Pakistan prime minister serves as PCB patron-in-chief while the board needs to select a minister as its chief.
The cricketing boards of Pakistan and Bangladesh are using political issues to influence their cricket matches. The Bangladesh national cricket team did not travel to India because the Indian government repeatedly assured them of security. Pakistan is now showing the same unwillingness to cooperate. The two countries established a pact which requires India and Pakistan to compete at ICC events in stadiums that are not connected to their home territories. The official said that boycotting the game only serves to create trouble through improper behavior.
