BCCI Gives Huge Update On Player’s Retention Rule And RTM Ahead Of IPL 2025 Mega Auction

The Board of Control for Cricket in India(BCCI) is coming up with a new retention rule for the IPL 2025 mega auction. They haven’t made a final decision yet but are reportedly considering keeping the existing three-plus-one rule, that is three retention and one Right To Match Card.

Many support the current system of three retention and one Right to Match (RTM) card. Not all franchises want a sudden increase in retention and RTMs.

According to a recent report, few franchises support the current system of three retention and one Right to Match (RTM) card. Most others don’t want to increase the number of retentions and RTMs for the upcoming IPL mega auction.

A senior official from an IPL franchise said that only a few teams can afford to keep 6-8 players, so increasing the number of retention and RTMs isn’t a good idea.

According to News 18, “Increasing retention to say 6 or eight and then also having RTMs will make auctions a useless exercise. Auctions have added to the beauty of the IPL and giving it lesser importance will not help in keeping the league in good health.”

The upcoming IPL mega auction has led to debates among the 10 franchises about the best player retention system. They are worried about how frequent player changes make it hard to build a loyal fan base in this prestigious league.
